Resumo: Objetivo Relações positivas entre distribuição regional e abundância são frequentemente encontradas para diferentes grupos de organismos e tipos de ecossistemas. No entanto, até onde sabemos, nenhum estudo buscou avaliar essa relação considerando um contexto no qual um determinado mecanismo fosse a explicação mais provável. Neste estudo, além da relação positiva com a abundância, nós testamos a hipótese de que a distribuição regional de espécies zooplanctônicas deveria ser maior durante o período de cheia uma vez que neste período a conectividade hidrológica é maior que no período de seca, facilitando a dispersão passiva entre os ambientes de uma planície de inundação. Métodos Nosso estudo foi realizado em 52 locais - incluindo lagoas e rios - na planície de inundação do rio Araguaia. Nós utilizamos uma análise de covariância para testar os efeitos da abundância e do período hidrológico sobre a distribuição regional. Resultados Encontramos, como esperado, uma relação positiva entre distribuição regional e abundância de espécies zooplanctônicas em cada período hidrológico. Nossos resultados também indicaram que, com o aumento da abundância, as distribuições regionais das espécies foram maiores no período de cheia. Conclusões O efeito positivo da cheia sobre a distribuição regional pode ser explicado pelo aumento do nível de água, que aumenta a conectividade hidrológica e o potencial de dispersão passiva do plâncton.

Abstract: Aim Positive relationships between occupancy and abundance are often found for different groups of organisms and ecosystem types. However, to our knowledge, no study has sought to assess this relationship considering a context in which a particular mechanism is the most likely explanation. In this study, in addition to the positive relationship with abundance, we tested the hypothesis that occupancy of zooplankton species should be greater during the flood season because in this period the hydrological connectivity is greater than in the dry season, facilitating passive dispersal between floodplain environments. Methods Our study was carried out at 52 sites - including lakes and rivers - on the Araguaia River floodplain. We used an analysis of covariance to test the effects of abundance and hydrological period on zooplankton occupancy. Results We found, as expected, a positive relationship between occupancy and abundance of zooplankton species in each hydrological period. Our results also indicated that, with the increase in abundance, species occupancies were higher in the flood than in the dry season. Conclusions The positive effect of the flood on zooplankton occupancy can be explained by the increase in water level that increases the hydrological connectivity and the potential for plankton passive dispersal.

Resumo: Objetivo Os reservatórios são um tipo cada vez mais comum de ecossistema aquático em países onde a energia hidrelétrica é uma fonte de energia dominante. A compreensão do funcionamento desses sistemas é essencial para estabelecer estratégias de monitoramento e prioridades de uso. O principal objetivo deste estudo foi testar se diferentes indicadores ecológicos apresentavam gradientes longitudinais em reservatórios. Métodos Coletamos dados ao longo dos eixos principais de 17 reservatórios tropicais para testar a relação entre diferentes indicadores ecológicos (por exemplo, turbidez, concentrações de nutrientes e abundância do fitoplâncton) e a distância da barragem. Depois, testamos se as magnitudes dos gradientes longitudinais estavam relacionadas a um conjunto de variáveis explanatórias (ocorrência de reservatórios em cascatas, presença de tributários próximos à barragem, uso do solo, morfologia e idade do reservatório). Resultados Não encontramos relações significativas entre nosso conjunto de indicadores ecológicos e a distância da barragem e as magnitudes dessas relações não foram consistentemente previstas pelas variáveis explanatórias. No entanto, diferentes indicadores exibiram padrões consistentes com as expectativas. Conclusão A distância da barragem não é um preditor consistente da variabilidade espacial de diferentes variáveis limnológicas em reservatórios tropicais, destacando um alto grau de dependência do contexto.

Abstract: Aim Reservoirs are an increasingly common type of aquatic ecosystem in countries where hydropower is a dominant energy source. Understanding the functioning of these systems is essential to establish monitoring strategies or priorities for their use. The main goal of this study was to test for the presence of longitudinal gradients in reservoirs. Methods We gathered data along the main axes of 17 tropical reservoirs to test the relationship between different ecological indicators (e.g., turbidity, nutrient concentrations, and phytoplankton abundance) and distance to the dam. After, we tested whether the strengths of longitudinal gradients were related to a set of explanatory variables (occurrence in a reservoir cascade, presence of tributaries near the dam, land-use, morphology and reservoir age). Results We did not find significant relationships between our set of ecological indicators and distance to the dam and the strengths of these relationships were not consistently predicted by the explanatory variables. However, different indicators suggested patterns consistent with expectations. Conclusion The distance to the dam is not a consistent predictor of the spatial variation of different limnological variables in tropical reservoirs, highlighting a high degree of context-dependency.

Resumo Avaliações de impacto acuradas de diferentes intervenções são necessidades na área ambiental. Nesse contexto, o principal desafio é identificar relações causais com o objetivo de compreender como diferentes intervenções afetam os sistemas de interesse. Para tal, a lógica contrafactual pode ser usada para estimar impactos de intervenções na escala real do problema utilizando dados observacionais. Contrafactuais são estados contrários aos fatos. No contexto de intervenções, seriam os estados das unidades intervindas na ausência da intervenção. Essa abordagem permite estimar o impacto de maneira mais acurada ao comparar as diferenças entre os estados factuais e contrafactuais. Nesse ensaio, apresentamos alguns elementos básicos da lógica contrafactual e discutimos como essa lógica, considerando o que ocorre em outras áreas (e.g., medicina e economia), pode ser útil para a pesquisa de problemas complexos em ecologia aquática.

Abstract Accurate impact evaluations of different interventions are paramount in environmental sciences. In this context, the main challenge is to identify causal relationships to understand how different interventions affect the systems of interest. For this task, the counterfactual thinking can be used to estimate the impacts of interventions on the real scale of the problem using observational data. By definition, counterfactuals are states contrary to facts. In the context of interventions, they are the states of the units of analysis in the absence of intervention. This approach allows one to estimate the impact more accurately by comparing the differences between factual and counterfactual states. In this essay, we present some basic elements of the counterfactual thinking and discuss how it, based on experiences in other areas (e.g., medicine and economics), may be useful for the research of complex problems in aquatic ecology.

Eigenfunction analyses have been widely used to model patterns of autocorrelation in time, space and phylogeny. In a phylogenetic context, Diniz-Filho et al. (1998) proposed what they called Phylogenetic Eigenvector Regression (PVR), in which pairwise phylogenetic distances among species are submitted to a Principal Coordinate Analysis, and eigenvectors are then used as explanatory variables in regression, correlation or ANOVAs. More recently, a new approach called Phylogenetic Eigenvector Mapping (PEM) was proposed, with the main advantage of explicitly incorporating a model-based warping in phylogenetic distance in which an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (O-U) process is fitted to data before eigenvector extraction. Here we compared PVR and PEM in respect to estimated phylogenetic signal, correlated evolution under alternative evolutionary models and phylogenetic imputation, using simulated data. Despite similarity between the two approaches, PEM has a slightly higher prediction ability and is more general than the original PVR. Even so, in a conceptual sense, PEM may provide a technique in the best of both worlds, combining the flexibility of data-driven and empirical eigenfunction analyses and the sounding insights provided by evolutionary models well known in comparative analyses.

Estudos prévios no Pantanal brasileiro sugerem que heterogeneidade fisiográfica poderia ser usada para delimitar diferentes sub-regiões. Todavia, a magnitude na qual essas regionalizações refletem padrões espaciais de variação na diversidade beta para diferentes grupos taxonômicos não foi testada até o momento. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar se os esquemas de regionalização propostos para o Pantanal brasileiro descrevem adequadamente a diversidade beta para aves e mamíferos. A presença e ausência de cada espécie de mamíferos e aves foram registradas em cada uma das 80 células de 0.5x0.5 graus em um mapa de grade quadriculada. O índice de similaridade de Jaccard foi usado para estimar a similaridade em cada par de células. Um método de classificação não hierárquico (k-means) foi aplicado para obter classificação "a posteriori" das células dentro de sub-regiões. As forças de classificações (CS) de cada classificação fisiográfica e "a posteriori" foi a diferença entre similaridade média dentro (W) e entre (B) subdivisões (CS=W-B). Ambas as classificações ("a priori" e "a posteriori") apresentaram baixos valores de CS, o que indica que elas não são aptas a representar os padrões de diversidade beta de mamíferos e aves dentro do Pantanal brasileiro. Os resultados sugerem que, provavelmente por causa da ampla distribuição geográfica e os baixos níveis de endemismo destes táxons, classificações fisiográficas do Pantanal brasileiro não são atalhos confiáveis para representar os padrões de diversidade beta de aves e mamíferos. Deste modo, inventários biológicos detalhados são necessários para a proposição de planos de conservação locais consistentes para esta região altamente diversa e ameaçada.

Correspondence between physiographic classifications and spatial patterns of β diversity in mammal and bird species assemblages in the Brazilian Pantanal: Previous studies in the Brazilian Pantanal suggest that physiographic heterogeneity could be used to delimit different subregions. However, the extent to which these regionalisations reflect spatial patterns of variation in beta diversity for different taxonomic groups has not been tested yet. The aim of this paper was to evaluate whether current regionalization schemes proposed for the Brazilian Pantanal adequately describe patterns of beta diversity in mammals and birds. The presence-absence of each mammal and bird species was recorded at each of the eighty 0.5x0.5 degree cells in a squared grid map. A Jaccard similitude index was used to estimate the similarity between each pair of cells. A non-hierarchical classification method (k-means) was applied to obtain "a posteriori" classification of cells into subregions. The classification strength (CS) of each physiographic scheme and the "a posteriori" classification was the difference between mean similarity within (W) and between (B) subidivisions (CS=W-B). Both classifications ("a priori" and "a posteriori") showed low values of CS, which indicates that they were not suitable to represent the beta diversity patterns in mammals and birds within the Brazilian Pantanal. The results suggest that, probably because the large geographic ranges and low levels of endemism in these taxa, physiographic classifications of the Brazilian Pantanal are no reliable shortcuts to represent beta diversity patterns in mammal and birds. Thus, detailed biological inventories are necessary to propose consistent local conservation plans in this highly diverse and threatened region.

The comparison of genetic divergence or genetic distances, estimated by pairwise F ST and related statistics, with geographical distances by Mantel test is one of the most popular approaches to evaluate spatial processes driving population structure. There have been, however, recent criticisms and discussions on the statistical performance of the Mantel test. Simultaneously, alternative frameworks for data analyses are being proposed. Here, we review the Mantel test and its variations, including Mantel correlograms and partial correlations and regressions. For illustrative purposes, we studied spatial genetic divergence among 25 populations of Dipteryx alata ("Baru"), a tree species endemic to the Cerrado, the Brazilian savannas, based on 8 microsatellite loci. We also applied alternative methods to analyze spatial patterns in this dataset, especially a multivariate generalization of Spatial Eigenfunction Analysis based on redundancy analysis. The different approaches resulted in similar estimates of the magnitude of spatial structure in the genetic data. Furthermore, the results were expected based on previous knowledge of the ecological and evolutionary processes underlying genetic variation in this species. Our review shows that a careful application and interpretation of Mantel tests, especially Mantel correlograms, can overcome some potential statistical problems and provide a simple and useful tool for multivariate analysis of spatial patterns of genetic divergence.

OBJETIVO: Investigamos experimentalmente o efeito da adição de nutrientes (Nitrogênio e Fósforo) sobre a densidade e o tamanho celular da comunidade de nanoflagelados planctônicos pigmentados e heterotróficos. MÉTODOS: O experimento foi desenvolvido em mesocosmos num reservatório tropical durante 19 dias. Quatro diferentes tratamentos foram utilizados: Controle (sem adição de nutrientes - C), adição de fósforo (P), adição de nitrogenio (N) e adição de fósforo + nitrogênio (N + P). Cada tratamento foi realizado em triplicata, sorteado randomicamente, totalizando 12 unidades experimentais as quais foram instaladas transversalmente no meio do reservatório. RESULTADOS: Em geral, os nanoflagelados pigmentados e heterotróficos responderam à adição de nutrientes, com incremento na densidade e biomassa nos tratamentos fertilizados. Ao contrário do esperado, os tratamentos enriquecidos mostraram um leve decréscimo no tamanho celular médio da fração pigmentada. Além disso, a contribuição relativa dos nanoflagelados pigmentados para a abundancia total foi maior nos tratamentos fertilizados quando comparada ao controle. CONCLUSÃO: Nossos resultados indicaram que: i) a densidade e a biomassa dos nanoflagelados responderam ao enriquecimento por nutrientes, principalmente quando N e P foram adicionados em conjunto; ii) as frações pigmentadas e heterotróficas apresentaram tempos distintos de resposta a fertilização; iii) o crescimento da comunidade de nanoflagelados parece ser co-limitada por N e P; iv) o enriquecimento por nutrientes tornou a contribuição da fração pigmentada maior que a contribuição da fração heterotrófica; e v) entre as variáveis analisadas da comunidade de nanoflagelados, a densidade pareceu ser mais sensível às alterações na disponibilidade de nutrientes quando comparada a biomassa e ao tamanho celular médio.

AIM: We experimentally investigated the effects of nutrients (Nitrogen and Phosphorus) enrichment on the density, biomass, and cell size of pigmented and heterotrophic plankton nanoflagellates communities. METHODS: The experiment was done in mesocosms in a tropical reservoir during a 19-day period. Four different treatments were carried out: Control (non-nutrient addition - C), phosphorus additions (P), nitrogen addition (N) and phosphorus + nitrogen addition (N + P). Each treatment was performed in triplicate, sorted randomly, thus giving a total of 12 experimental carboys, which were placed transversely in the middle of the reservoir. RESULTS: In general, pigmented and heterotrophic nanoflagellates fractions responded to nutrient addition, increasing densities and biomass values at the fertilized treatments. Opposed to expected, enriched treatments resulted in a slight decrease in mean cell size of the pigmented fraction. Moreover, in nutrient-rich treatments, pigmented nanoflagellates had higher relative abundance than in the control. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that: i) the density and biomass of nanoflagellates responded to the nutrient enrichment, mainly when N and P were added together; ii) the pigmented and heterotrophic fractions showed distinct time responses to fertilization; iii) the growth of nanoflagellate community seems to be co-limited by N and P; iv) the nutrient enrichment led to a greater pigmented than heterotrophic fraction contribution; and v) among the analyzed variables, nanoflagellate densities seem to be more sensitive to changes in nutrient availability than biomass or mean cell size.

Several metrics have been developed for estimating phylogenetic signal in comparative data. These may be important both in guiding future studies on correlated evolution and for inferring broad-scale evolutionary and ecological processes (e.g., phylogenetic niche conservatism). Notwithstanding, the validity of some of these metrics is under debate, especially after the development of more sophisticated model-based approaches that estimate departure from particular evolutionary models (i.e., Brownian motion). Here, two of these model-based metrics (Blomberg's K-statistics and Pagel's λ) are compared with three statistical approaches [Moran's I autocorrelation coefficient, coefficients of determination from the autoregressive method (ARM), and phylogenetic eigenvector regression (PVR)]. Based on simulations of a trait evolving under Brownian motion for a phylogeny with 209 species, we showed that all metrics are strongly, although non-linearly, correlated to each other. Our analyses revealed that statistical approaches provide valid results and may be still particularly useful when detailed phylogenies are unavailable or when trait variation among species is difficult to describe by more standard Brownian or O-U evolutionary models.

Ecólogos geralmente estimam médias, mas dedicam pouca atenção à variação. O estudo da variação é um aspecto chave para entender sistemas naturais e fazer predições. Em ecologia de comunidades, a maioria dos estudos foca na diversidade local de espécies (diversidade alfa), e apenas recentemente ecólogos passaram a dar atenção apropriada a variação na composição de comunidades entre sítios amostrais (diversidade beta). Isto acontece apesar do fato das primeiras tentativas de estimar diversidade beta terem sido feitas pelos trabalhos pioneiros de Koch e Whittaker na década de 1950. Houve significativo progresso na última década no desenvolvimento tanto de métodos como de hipóteses sobre a origem e manutenção da variação na composição de comunidades. Por exemplo, métodos estão disponíveis para particionar a diversidade total de uma região (diversidade gama) num componente local (alfa) e diversos componentes de diversidade beta, cada um referente a uma escala na hierarquia. A popularização da chamada abordagem de dados brutos (raw-data approach) (baseada em técnicas de ordenação parcial restrita) e abordagem baseada em distância (distance-based approach) (baseada em correlações de matrizes de dissimilaridade/distância) tem possibilitado a avaliação de hipóteses sobre os padrões de diversidade beta. De maneira geral, estas hipóteses são baseadas nas teorias de nicho e neutra, e levam em consideração o papel do ambiente e do espaço (ou combinação deles) na determinação das metacomunidades. Estudos recentes avaliaram estes temas em grande variedade de escalas espaciais e temporais, de habitats e grupos taxonômicos. Adicionalmente, histórias de vida e traços funcionais das espécies tais como habilidades de dispersão e raridade estão começando a ser consideradas nos estudos de diversidade beta. Neste artigo nós revisamos brevemente algumas destas novas ferramentas e abordagens e as ilustramos com estudos de caso em ecossistemas aquáticos.

Ecologists usually estimate means, but devote much less attention to variation. The study of variation is a key aspect to understand natural systems and to make predictions regarding them. In community ecology, most studies focus on local species diversity (alpha diversity), but only in recent decades have ecologists devoted proper attention to variation in community composition among sites (beta diversity). This is in spite of the fact that the first attempts to estimate beta diversity date back to the pioneering work by Koch and Whittaker in the 1950s. Progress in the last decade has been made in the development both of methods and of hypotheses about the origin and maintenance of variation in community composition. For instance, methods are available to partition total diversity in a region (gamma diversity), in a local component (alpha), and several beta diversities, each corresponding to one scale in a hierarchy. The popularization of the so-called raw-data approach (based on partial constrained ordination techniques) and the distance-based approach (based on correlation of dissimilarity/distance matrices) have allowed many ecologists to address current hypotheses about beta diversity patterns. Overall, these hypotheses are based on niche and neutral theory, accounting for the relative roles of environmental and spatial processes (or a combination of them) in shaping metacommunities. Recent studies have addressed these issues on a variety of spatial and temporal scales, habitats and taxonomic groups. Moreover, life history and functional traits of species such as dispersal abilities and rarity have begun to be considered in studies of beta diversity. In this article we briefly review some of these new tools and approaches developed in recent years, and illustrate them by using case studies in aquatic ecosystems.

O bioma Cerrado é o segundo maior da região Neotropical e é formado por mosaico de diferentes tipos de hábitats, desde campos abertos até florestas densas. Um recente e intensivo processo de ocupação humana tem transformado essa eco-região em uma das mais importantes regiões para agropecuária no Brasil. Uma abordagem macroecológica foi utilizada para elucidar padrões em amplas escalas espaciais de perdas de hábitat no Cerrado brasileiro, implementando técnicas de autocorrelação espacial e análises de regressão parcial para entender como a proporção de remanescentes de vegetação natural está correlacionada com variáveis socioeconômicas, expressando diferentes dimensões de ocupação humana e com variações climáticas. Em média, 59% da área é ocupada por remanescentes de vegetação, na escala da análise, mesmo que os padrões de perda de hábitat estejam fortemente estruturados no espaço, com o coeficiente de autocorrelação espacial de I de Moran igual a 0,825 ± 0,055 (p < 0 ,001). As análises de regressão parcial explicaram 89% da variação no percentual de remanescente de vegetação. A maior proporção da variância é explicada pela sobreposição múltipla entre a ocupação humana, variação climática e a estrutura geográfica (67%), bem como pelo componente estruturado climaticamente da ocupação humana (8%). Baseado no processo interativo no tempo e no espaço da ocupação humana no bioma, cenários futuros devem ser mais pessimistas. Se o movimento de ocupação continuar em direção a região Norte do bioma, como esperado, nós podemos predizer que as proporções de remanescente de vegetação natural irão declinar rapidamente, indicando assim uma forte perda da biodiversidade nas escalas do bioma.

The Cerrado biome, the second largest biome in Neotropical region, consists of a mosaic of different habitat types, ranging from open grasslands to dense woodlands and dry forests. An intensive recent occupation process has transformed it into the most important region for cattle ranching and intensive commodity crops in Brazil. In this study, a macroecological approach was used to evaluate broad-scale spatial patterns of habitat loss in the Brazilian Cerrado, applying a series of spatial autocorrelation and partial regression analyses to understand how the proportion of remaining natural habitats is correlated with socio-economic variables, expressing different dimensions of human occupation and climatic variation. On average, 59% of the area is occupied by natural remnants at the spatial scale analyzed, although patterns of habitat loss are strongly spatially structured, with a Moran's I spatial autocorrelation coefficient equal to 0.825 ± 0.055 (p < 0.001). The partial regression analysis explains 89% of variation in percentage of natural remnants. The highest proportion of variance is explained by the multiple overlap between human occupation, climatic variation and geographic structure (67%), as well as by the climatically structured component of human occupation (8%). Based on the space-time interactive process of human occupation in the biome, future scenarios should be rather pessimistic. If the wave of human occupation continues towards the northern parts of the biome, as expected, we can predict that percentages will decline rapidly including even stronger losses of habitat at the biome scale.

Nesse estudo, a transposição de peixes na escada experimental do reservatório de Itaipu (Paraná, Brasil) foi avaliada em relação à variação diária, tamanho dos peixes, estágios reprodutivos e a composição das espécies. O estudo foi conduzido de Outubro de 1995 a Fevereiro de 1996, e de Novembro de 1996 a Janeiro de 1997, em dois trechos da escada (caixas a 10 e 27 m de altura). Vinte e duas espécies foram registradas, e Prochilodus lineatus, Pimelodus maculatus, Leporinus obtusidens, Schizodon borellii e Leporinus friderici compuseram 86,6% das capturas. O tamanho dos peixes não diferiu entre os períodos do dia e caixas. Por outro lado, a abundância das principais espécies foi significativamente influenciada pela posição das caixas, estágio de reprodução e período do dia. A caixa superior tendeu a apresentar menor abundância de peixes, sugerindo certa seletividade na subida. A habilidade em ascender a escada não esteve relacionada com a migração reprodutiva, visto que adultos não-reprodutivos compuseram a maior parte das capturas. Um padrão interessante foi a preferência, apresentada pelos grandes grupos taxonômicos, por períodos específicos do dia na ascensão da escada: os Characiformes subiram a escada predominantemente durante o dia, enquanto os Siluriformes durante a noite. Esses resultados enfatizam o quão complexas são as escadas como ferramentas de manejo, e realçam a necessidade de ampliar o nível de informações sobre diversos aspectos como condição chave para que metas conservacionistas sejam alcançadas.

In this study, we evaluated the fish ascent in the experimental ladder at Itaipu Reservoir (Paraná State, Brazil), in relation to diel variation, fish size, reproductive stages and species composition. The study was carried out from October, 1995 to February, 1996 and from November, 1996 to January, 1997 at two points on the ladder (boxes at heights of 10 and 27 m). Twenty-two species were recorded, and Prochilodus lineatus, Pimelodus maculatus, Leporinus obtusidens, Schizodon borellii and Leporinus friderici accounted for 86.6 % of the total catch. Fish length did not differ between diel periods and boxes. On the other hand, fish abundance of the main species was significantly influenced by box position, reproductive stage and diel period. The higher box showed lower abundance, suggesting some selectivity in ascension. The ability to ascend the ladder did not show any relationship with reproductive migration, since non-reproductive adults comprised most of the catch. An interesting finding is that the major taxonomic groups showed specific diel preferences in ascending the ladder: Characiformes ascended the ladder predominantly during daylight, whereas Siluriformes migrated at night. These results emphasize how complex ladders are as management tools, and stress the need to acquire information on several aspects as a condition to achieve conservation goals.

A seleção específica de uma escada de peixes do tipo seqüência de tanques, com passagem de fundo (tipo weir and orifice), na barragem da hidrelétrica de Itaipu (rio Paraná), foi avaliada através de amostragens no rio a jusante (amostragem trimestral em 1997) e em dois pontos ao longo da escada (10 e 27m de altura; nov/94 a jan/97 e nov/94 a fev/97, respectivamente). Das 65 espécies registradas no rio imediatamente a jusante da barragem, 27 foram capturadas na escada. As espécies com maior densidade na escada, em sua maioria migradoras, tiveram abundância moderada ou baixa a jusante. Entre as mais abundantes a jusante, apenas uma, não migradora, foi registrada na escada. A escada apresentou seleção negativa aos grandes pimelodídeos migradores que pode ser superada com a ampliação na escala do projeto. As amostragens evidenciaram baixa seletividade específica ao longo da escada, sendo seu modelo hidráulico satisfatório na atração e eficiente na ascensão de peixes.

The specific selection of a weir and orifice type experimental fish ladder in the dam of the Itaipu Reservoir (Paraná River) was evaluated by samplings in the river downstream and at two points along the ladder (at heights of 10 m and 27 m) during 28 months. Among the 65 species recorded in the river (immediate downstream of the dam), 27 were captured on the ladder. The species that showed highest density on the ladder, the majority migratory, were moderately, or only slightly, abundant downstream. Among the most abundant species downstream, only one, non-migratory, was recorded in the ladder. The structure presented a negative selection in relation to large migratory pimelodids that might be overcome by enlarging the scale of its design. The sampling demonstrated a moderate selection of species along the ladder and its hydraulic model proved satisfactory regarding the attraction and efficient ascent of the fishes.
